It’s common to have difficulties adjusting to CPAP therapy for sleep apnea. You’ll probably feel a bit uncomfortable the first few times you sleep with your equipment on. However, you can get a better night’s sleep when the mask fits properly.
Here are a few tips for getting the perfect CPAP mask fit:
-
Troubleshoot which size you need: This can be the trickiest part for people using CPAP machines for the first time. Masks come in a variety of sizes, from petite to extra-large. To find your size for a certain brand, use that brand’s mask fitting guide. Keep in mind that the sizes aren’t standardized across brands.
-
Know how you sleep: Knowing if you breathe through your nose or mouth when you sleep is key to getting the right mask. You should also know if you tend to sleep on your stomach, side, or back, as this will also affect the way your mask fits. If you’re unsure how you sleep, ask your partner or a relative who has been around you when you sleep.
-
Keep an open mind: It may take some trial and error as you find the fit that’s right for you, so stay patient and keep an open mind. You need to find a mask that creates a seal through which air can’t escape but that also feels comfortable to wear. You shouldn’t feel air escaping nor should it be so tight that you get red marks on your face.
